The Train That Got Away: A Cautionary Tale of Navigating Paris Train Station
I’ll never forget the day I missed my train at Paris Train Station. It was a chaotic and frustrating experience that left me feeling defeated and stranded in a foreign city. But as I look back on that day, I realize that it was a valuable learning experience that taught me the importance of being prepared and aware of my surroundings when navigating a busy train station.

The Mistake
I had arrived at the train station with plenty of time to spare, or so I thought. However, as I began to navigate my way towards the station, I realized turn after turn that this train station was much larger than expected. My walking turned into running, and by the end I was sprinting with my giant suitcase. Unfortunately, once I made it to the main central train station, I realized that the adventure had just begun. As someone who is from a suburban city in the midwest, the railway schedules were confusing to navigate in French. I ended up using my (very rudimentary) French to ask a fellow traveler for help identifying my station. But it was for naught, because before I knew it the train was pulling out of the station. And I was left standing on the platform, wondering how in the world I was going to navigate my way through this one.
The Lesson
As I stood there, feeling frustrated and defeated, I realized that I had made a critical mistake. I had underestimated the complexity of the train station. I had assumed that I had plenty of time to spare, but in reality, the train station was much busier and more confusing than I had anticipated.
The Struggle is Real: Lifting Big Suitcases up and Down Stairs
What made my experience even more challenging was the fact that I had to lift my big suitcase up and down the stairs at the train station. The station’s lack of elevators and escalators made it a real struggle to navigate, especially with a heavy suitcase in tow. I had to stop and catch my breath several times. I tried to reframe it as a way to get in a quick workout during my vacation, but I think I would rather weightlift in the gym.Â
Learn from My Mistake
So, what can you learn from my mistake? Here are a few takeaways:
- Arrive early: Make sure you arrive at the train station with plenty of time to spare. Don’t assume that you can just show up at the last minute and expect to catch your train.
- Stay focused: Stay focused and aware of your surroundings at all times. Don’t get distracted by the sights and sounds of the station, and make sure you’re keeping an eye on the clock.
- Know the station: Take the time to familiarize yourself with the train station and its layout. Know where the platforms are, and know how to get to them.
- Be prepared to lift: If you have a big suitcase, be prepared to lift it up and down the stairs at the train station. Consider packing light, or bringing a portable luggage cart to help you navigate the station.
Conclusion
Missing my train at Paris Train Station was a frustrating and chaotic experience, but it was also a valuable learning experience. I learned the importance of being prepared and aware of my surroundings, and I learned to appreciate the challenges of navigating a busy train station. So, if you’re planning to travel by train in Paris, take it from me: arrive early, stay focused, know the station, and be prepared to lift. Your train (and your sanity) will thank you.
